Supporting, encouraging and presenting the arts in Northumberland County since 1975.

Friends of Music – 2024 Update

Friends of Music (FOM) continues to find ways to present live performances of classical music!  We intend to continue to participate actively in the cultural life of Northumberland County.

Our organization’s mandate specifically describes FOM as a “registered charity formed to encourage and foster interest in and study of the arts and music in particular”.  We don’t see any reason to change this mission although we have adopted a different approach to fulfilling the mission.  Over the past several years our subscriber base fell to levels that meant the organization was not financially sustainable in its traditional format.  The decline perhaps reflected the aging population and, no doubt, the increasing number of entertainment alternatives available to everyone in Northumberland County.

September 15, 2024 Concerts

In September 2024, in partnership with Joanne and Tyne Bonebakker, FOM is presenting two performances at a private home in the Northumberland hills, near Cobourg. These concerts will feature several of the most glorious works of the Golden Age of Violinists.  For tickets and more information, please visit our Home page.  We are delighted to continue the strong tradition of Friends of Music, presenting wonderful music in special settings across Northumberland County.

Future Direction

We continue to examine our mandate and determine how we can best support the arts in Northumberland. The fact that we are a Registered Charity is quite valuable. This means that we can issue charitable receipts to donors.

We plan to continue to raise funds to support regular classical music events.  Donations to FOM in the past were a cornerstone of our success for over 40 years and they also represented a strong personal support for our music presentations.  We intend to build on our heritage.

If you want to donate to support the arts in Northumberland (charitable receipts will be issued), please visit our Donations page.   If have ideas for our future and/or you want to volunteer to help us, please send us an email at info@friendsofmusicontario.ca.
